Security Standards & Orgs: OWASP, NIST

You don’t need to be a security expert. You do need to be literate enough to ask good questions, recognize the names when they come up in an audit or an incident review, and point your team at the right resource instead of inventing your own. Two organizations do most of the heavy lifting in that vocabulary: OWASP and NIST.

OWASP — the practical, builder-facing one

The Open Worldwide Application Security Project (OWASP) is an open, nonprofit community that produces free, vendor-neutral resources for application security. It’s the one your engineers are most likely to have heard of, because it speaks their language — it’s about the code and the apps they actually ship.

The flagship is the OWASP Top 10: a periodically updated list of the ten most critical web application security risks — things like broken access control, injection, and security misconfiguration. It’s widely recognized, it’s written for developers, and it’s a genuinely good shared reference. I treat it as the floor, not the ceiling: if a team can’t speak to how they handle the Top 10, that’s a gap worth closing before we worry about anything more exotic.

Don’t hand your team the Top 10 as a compliance checklist. Use it as a conversation starter in a tech-design review or a threat-modeling session: “Which of these ten could actually bite us, given what this service does?” The list is most valuable as a prompt for thinking, not a box to tick.

NIST — the standards-and-frameworks one

The National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) is a U.S. government agency that develops standards and guidelines across many fields, including a large body of work on cybersecurity. Where OWASP is bottom-up and app-focused, NIST tends to be broader and more organizational — frameworks, control catalogs, and detailed publications that security teams and auditors lean on.

For a manager, the one to recognize is the NIST Cybersecurity Framework (CSF). Its five functions — identify, protect, detect, respond, recover — give you a clean mental model for talking about security posture, and your security and compliance partners are very likely mapping their own work to it. You don’t need to memorize the control families; you do need to know what someone means when they say “this maps to the Protect function.”

How I actually use this

  • OWASP is where I point engineers for hands-on, app-level security literacy. The Top 10 is the shared vocabulary.
  • NIST is where I orient myself for the bigger-picture, organizational and audit conversations — and where my security partners usually already live.

The landscape moves. New attack classes appear, the Top 10 gets reordered, frameworks get revised. The goal isn’t to keep all of it in your head — it’s to know these names, know roughly what each one is for, and stay curious enough to look it up when it matters.
